Natural Killer Cell-Mediated Cytoptoxicity in Pregnant Women and Their Neonates
Lee Jae-Chung

Kim Dong-Jip
Abstract
The authors studied natural killer cell mediated cytotoxicity (NKMC) in the normal pregnant women and their neonates to evaluate the maternal immune status during pregnancy and also self defense ability in, fetuses. The authors¢¥ data showed that the NKMC in the pregnant women was lower than that in the normal women and the NKMC in the neonates was higher than that in the delivered women. In view of the result of the authors¢¥ study, depressed NKMC during pregnancy suggested that pregnancy is in a state of "immunological generosity" to prevent rejection of the fetuses from mother¢¥s competent immune system, and fetuses¢¥ NKMC, which is higher than that of mother¢¥s, suggests that they possess the ability to prevent themselves from possible graft-versus-host reaction by maternal lymphocytes.
